Anyone that knows me personally know that I have the noisiest knees possible for a human. I do a deep squat and it sounds like someone is running through a storm, stepping on sticks and popping bubble wrap. I truly wish I was joking. I have always been told noisy knees are not really an issue if there is no pain. However, people want to know what is going on and why their knees sound like a creaky door. If you do have clicking knees with pain, then it’s a different story. You need to figure out if you are experiencing pain along with the clicking, or if they are completely separate issues.
A common cause and the most likely for my noisy knees is crepitus. This talks about noise in the joints such as popping and cracking and in most cases are not the cause or result of any pain problems. In saying that crepitus in the knee can occur due to a meniscus tear, arthritis, degeneration, patella femoral joint problems, bursa issue or problems with the joint capsule. It is the result of wear and tear and is a very common condition, usually indicating some sort of stress on the knees. Although there may be no pain present to start, it is likely that there is a pathology associated with it and some biomechnical problem in the knee or past injury flaring up. However if there is not pain or swelling in the joint, then it is probably 100% fine.
If you do have clicking knees with pain, then it’s time to get to the root of the pain, see a therapist, get a diagnosis and get healthily Lucky for you I have two instalments left coming up speaking about common causes of knee pain, and how to get rid of any kind of knee pain at home.
